cubeBlu-ray copy protection hacked

19 March 2008
SlySoft, the makers of AnyDVD HD, have released an updated version of the copy-protection removal tool which allows Blu-ray owners to copy Blu-ray discs.

It amazes me companies still use copy protection on their CDs, DVDs, MP3s, etc. There is a simple rule: what can be read, can be copied. For every new copy protection method, the question is not: "will this one work?", but "how long before it gets hacked?".

I would have to totally agree. At the rate that protections are being bypassed, what is the purpose of even adding them at all? Regardless of how "new" and how "secure" it is to the previous version of protections, it will be bypassed, no doubt about it.
not suprised

Hey - Blue-Ray is a Sony format -what did you expect? Certainly a conflict of interest situation here. Sony-BMG division is one of the big 5 recoding companies. Parent Sony is in the hardware business. They want to supply hardware, while BMG division supplies content. Just as Microcrap SHOULD have been broken up (but wasn't due to election of Republicans/Bush after the Clinton administration), Sony SHOULD have to divest itself of it's BMG division. The amalgamation and growth of larger companies may work to the benefit of shareholders, but certainly not the public. The problem is how to balance the greed of capitalism versus public rights without too much government interference, lest one go to the socialist extreme. At the moment, we do seem way too far over to the unbridled capitalist side. A BIT more government intervention is SOMETIMES worthwhile (eg -maybe some more inspectors of produce and meat packing plants would be in order. Trusting coporations to self-police/self regulate has recently had dire consequences!).

Meanwhile, support artists that deal directly with their customers, and boycott those using the big 5 recoding companies. And never forget the Sony rootkit fiasco....
